02 – Spirituality & burning of karma

Spirituality & Burning of Karmas - Nishit Jariwala

Advaita Vedanta says once you get into spirituality, exhaustion of karma accelerates. Spirituality burns away all kind of Karma very fast, be it good or bad. Why?

Karma can only bind you as long as you identify with the doer. Deep spiritual insight reduces doership. When doership dissolves even slightly, the karmic backlog starts to burn faster.

Spirituality doesn’t just burn away past karma, but also stops accumulating new karma. Life becomes simpler, cleaner, sometimes more challenging but ultimately more freeing.

Seeker moves towards Moksha faster.

In Advaita, the highest state is not to enjoy good karma, but to transcend karma altogether.

Quotes

When all desires that dwell in the heart are destroyed, then the mortal becomes immortal.

— Katha Upanishad 2.3.14

He who knows the Self transcends both good and evil.

— Prashna Upanishad 1.16

The one who has surrendered doership is not bound by karma, even while acting.

— Gita 5.8–9

“For the knower of Brahman, karma is burnt as a rope is burnt.”

— Vivekachudamani 449

When the sense of doership is given up, karma ceases to bind.

— Ramana Maharshi

I remember Sri Sri Ravi Shankar once said in one of his videos that a spiritual seeker loses his ability to manifest for himself. But he gains the ability to bless others.

As a seeker moves inward, personal desires stop being the centre of life. When desires lose power, karma loses power.

Ashtavakra Gita supports this.

“He who has understood the Self has no desires left.”

— Ashtavakra Gita 3.4

“The wise do not act for personal gain; their actions benefit all.”

— Ashtavakra Gita 18.54
